An alternative way to use pineapple in fashion.

Can you imagine wearing a pineapple? Ananas Anam enables it by using the fibre from discarded pineapple leaves to create an innovative natural fabric called Piñatex. The leaves are a by-product of the pineapple harvest, so that the raw material does not require additional resources to be diverted from the environment. The advantages? It is cruelty free and sustainably-sourced.

The idea came from Carmen Hijosa, a leather goods expert, who during a consultation on the leather export industry in the Philippines was taken aback when she realized the amount of chemical pollution caused by leather. At the same time, she was fascinated by the amount of natural resources that could be used to reverse this polluting cycle and discovered a new natural textile fibre that could provide a positive social and economic impact.

Inspired by the principles of the circular economy, Piñatex enables to develop local farming communities with a low environmental impact. An innovation of this magnitude could not go unrewarded, so much so that Ananas Anam has won several awards including the Award for Material Innovation from the Arts Foundation UK in 2016, the Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) 'Vegan Fashion Label' and their Innovation Award.

Today the world is increasingly realizing that it is time to protect the planet and use sustainable materials. Indeed, a great number of companies have understood that and have revolutionized their production processes, by using innovative, but natural resources, such as grapes, mushrooms and apples.
